Microsoft Security update breaks ZoneAlarm firewall

If you have followed my advice and installed ZoneAlarm firewall on your home computer, you need to be aware that an update released by Microsoft on July 8, 2008 breaks your internet access. This is why I do not recommend installing Windows Updates right away. I usually wait a couple of weeks for the techhies (like me) to find problems. Having a software or hardware firewall installed mitigates the need to update immediately.

Before allowing Windows to update itself, check for and install the latest version of ZoneAlarm. Double-click the ZA icon in the system tray and ZA will tell you if you have the latest version. Perform an upgrade instead of a clean install. You will need to restart the computer and ZA will ask you questions about your computer security, so it will take about 10-15 minutes.

If you have already installed Windows Updates from July 8th and you no longer have internet access, follow this link to fix internet access. You want to select and download the "ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall" for the free version.
